Assassin Snail
Assassin Snail
The Assassin Snail, Anentome helena, native to Southeast Asia, is a small but highly effective predator in freshwater aquariums. Measuring around 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) when fully grown, these snails are known for their conical, spiral shells, often featuring alternating bands of yellow and dark brown, giving them a striking appearance.
Assassin Snails are carnivorous and famous for their ability to control pest snail populations. They use a specialized siphon to detect prey, and their slow yet methodical hunting technique makes them ideal for aquariums overrun with unwanted snails. In addition to controlling pest populations, they can scavenge for leftover fish food and detritus, contributing to tank cleanliness.
Assassin Snails thrive in a range of water conditions but prefer slightly alkaline, well-oxygenated water with a pH of 7.0 to 8.0 and a temperature between 70°F and 80°F (21°C to 27°C). They are peaceful towards fish and other tank mates, making them suitable for community aquariums. However, they may prey on other snails, so they should not be kept with valuable ornamental snail species. Reproduction in captivity is slow, as they lay small batches of eggs rather than multiplying rapidly like other snail species.
