CaribSea's Eco-Planted (10lbs) black aquarium substrate is strictly made up of basalt, which is an inert volcanic rock that helps with biological filtration growth and will not buffer pH. Though it is marketed as a planted substrate, with its name, it is recommend to add some aquarium soil underneath this gravel.
